Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: How Robotic Companion Pets are Making Life More Joyful for Older Adults
[1:13] – Ted shares something that he believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- You have to be authentically you through the process of success. Fake it until you make it never really works. It is important to be authentically who you are through the good and bad , the highs and lows and build teams around you that shares your dreams and passsions. This is the key to success.
[2:20] – Ted talks about what is Ageless Innovation and shares its origin story.
- Ageless Innovation is a company that serves a global population of older adults. It makes fun and joyful products that improve the quality of life, well being and a positive health impact to older adults.
- Ageless Innovation is 7 years old but their brand “Joy for All” started in 2015 back in Hasbro. He was brought in to lead a new innovation team that is focused on internal innovative and organic growth.
- Hasbro is good at the health and wellness space and as they explore, they found an animatronic toy that was made 25 years ago for young girls. About 20% of the reviews is bought for an aging loved one, they found the impact of this and they dug into it and learned the need for interactive companionship which is also fun to play and enjoyable for older adults.
- The Joy for All brand was launched in 2015 which is a line of robotic companion pets. After running internally for 3 years , they finf it harder to focus 100% on older adults in the Hasbro engine and they thought they have a bigger chance to grow out of Hasbro so they expanded out in 2018. They have been running it for the last 7 years as Ageless Innovation and the Joy for All brand.
[4:49] – Ted talks about what has changed since they launched it in 2018.
- What they learned in time was in the last 10 years, there was no product or category like this and they considered themselves as category creators because there was no market place that serves the audience that they want to serve with the type of product that they want to have and they’ve got to create all these channels.
- The couple of big changers are finding a healthcare funding channels that allowed older adults to use products that are funded by sponsors and expanding in healthcare was one of their biggest learnings.
- The other one is to not assume what older adults wants. They included them in the process from concept to launch every product that they had. They can’t assume or reimagine games without the older adults’ inputs and involvement. They listen to the end user or customers.
[7:05] – Ted shares a story of the impact Joy for All pets had on the life of an older adult.
- They received letters and texts each week and most of it are from people who have gifted their parents. They found that it change the last days of their lives and made an impact in a way that when they died, the toys were buried with them.

[13:38] – Ted talks about what is the Joy for All games.
- They maintained a good relationship with Hasbro when they left in 2018. They call themselves Hasbeens. After a year and a half, Hasbro came to them and said that they saw a spike in their iconic board games and told them there is a great opportunity to reimagine those games and that they are the people who are suited to do it. They become the first exclusive licensee for the older adult population. They were given the access to the entire catalog of games and in 2023, they launched their first set of games , the Trivia Pursuit Generations that received a nomination for a grown up toy of the year. Other games that they have are Game of Life Generations, Scrabble Bingo, Taboo Charrades and they are about to launch their newest game Yatzi Slots.
- Based on their experience with their pets that were sold in a lot of countries, they received a lot of feedback from older adults so when they got this opportunity , they took what’s great about those games and modified and reimagined them in a way that will make it more fun for this population.
- They also focus on inter-generational play because they think of the impact of social isolation and loneliness ro older adults because their peer groups are getting smaller. This will encourage inter-generational connectivity to bring people together.
[17:25] – Ted talks about the future of the Joy for All brand.
- Creating something that allowed his grandmother to interact with her friends and their community has always been his driving force.
- The vision is that they want to be the world leader in giving a fun and playful experience for older adults with meaningful impact.
- They focus on health and wellness that is fun and engaging with their pets and that is a validation proof.
- They are constantly talking to older adults about their challenges and issues of what they are facing and what brings them more joy and fun in their life and try to integrate those things in going forward.
- They are working on 2.0 version of their pets.
- They think about how AI interface with their platform and they are moving in a innovative direction without interrupting the relation between their products and their end users.

- We have an enormous population of a forgotten generation of people turning 65. The need and the desires and the ability of this population is not being served the way that they should . We’ve got this amazing older adults population society that when we don’t focus enough , interacting with them or meeting their needs we will miss the opportunity.
