Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: Financial Literacy: The Key to Innovation and Growth
[1:34] – Stephen shares something that he believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- You have to have the grit to withstand punches financially in business and the ability to learn to help you grow not just arithmetically but exponentially to be successful.
[2:53] – Stephen talks about how America’s education system today is addressing financial literacy and what are the gaps that still exist.
- We haven’t focused enough on how to prepare people for the real world and balancing check book is one and so is opening a checking account. We need to teach the basics and those who do teach the young adults should be capable of teaching which means that they should have done it for themselves to be able to teach it.
[4:52] – Stephen talks about why financial literacy is especially critical in his state California.
- California used to be the No. 1 innovator and educator in the US. It still does in innovation but not so much in education. It is perhaps because of the leaders that were chosen to run the state were not geared to execute the laws for education system.
[6:20] – Stephen talks about some other curriculum that is critical to help drive entrepreneurship that is not being addressed in our current education system.
- You have to know your numbers in a daily basis. You have to know how much you are charging for goods and how much it cost to sell those goods not forgetting about GNA and taxes.
- A lot of people say they made so much money per year but the taxes are not adjusted.
- People like to tell you the good things but in business, you must be sober about what you are doing whether the good , the bad and the ugly.
- True success only comes in falling in puzzles because it is how you navigate in those puzzles.

- They launched a political action committee to hire or elect great school board officials that understand that civics and financial literacy are key component parts to the young adults future. These are the core issues that everyone can agree on.
- When it comes to civics, he found out that it was not thought of. We can’t perpetuate a democracy if we don’t understand the basis of it which is what civics is all about.
[16:29] – Stephen tells why entrepreneurship is not the only way to be secure in today’s volatile workplace.
- He doesn’t think being an entrepreneur is the only way to be secure but if you do want to be a trade person today, you can create a viable financial world that certain individual will be happy with.
- Becoming an entrepreneur is not for everyone. Taking the jump into the entrepreneurial world requires risks and not everyone is cut out for risks.
[17:25] – Stephen shares what traits does he ook for when hiring someone out of school.
- He wants somebody with a good EQ, IQ and grit. Those who try hard, get up early, stay late and are willing to learn.
- On the job training is fantastic for him and he doesn’t look at grades as long as he/she passed.
- What is important to him is being well-rounded and showing interest, able to take challenges and forward thinker, somebody who is willing to solve a problem and not cause a problem.
- He gives second chances but if you lie, you die for it only shows that you don’t have integrity.
[19:01] – Stephen tells what keeps him up at night.
- Thinking of how to make the world better and how to bring back civil discourse where people agree to disagree and do it in a more thoughtful way.
[20:20] – Stephen gives his take away.
- When you spit at the moon, it spits back to your face, don’t do it.
[20:37] – Stephen gives his call to action.
- Rise up, stand up, get up early, stay lat, work hard, don’t complain, focus on the positive and always look at yourselves in the mirror. Live in a world of love and exclusivity and be part of the solution and not the problem.
