Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: Sudden Wealth Syndrome: Trauma stories of high net worth individuals.
[1:35] – Resh shares something that he believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- He distrust people who are always certain and certainty is always a bad sign.
[3:07] – Resh talks about why a lot of people have little sympathy for rich people.
- People label an assumption that extreme wealth is a sort of vaccination against human suffering.
- The human capacity for suffering is entirely independent to one’s worth or bank account.
- The misconception for a lot of people is thinking that money provides immunity or vaccination against the tribulations in life.
- There is also a level of envy and jealousy. The idea that life is unfair is the principle why there is so little sympathy for billionaires who are suffering.
[4:50] – Resh talks about Highlands Recovery, a luxury rehabilitation center he founded in Sydney that offers holistic treatment for high-net-worth individuals suffering from trauma, addiction, and related mental health issues.
- The Highlands project highlights 2 things; one is it’s looking at people with high networth’s suffering trauma or stressed related disorders are multiplied, amplified are greater and the severity is higher.
- Second reason is it is an opportunity for him to be given a platform where one of the principal considerations is constructing a clinical program not limited by money and where he can build his vision of what a good treatment really looks like .
[6:53] – Resh share some of the unique aspects of treating sudden wealth syndrome and trauma.
- Sudden Wealth Syndrome is not an actual recognized clinical syndrome but a colloquial term used because more and more people are seeing this.
- It is a collection or constellation of symptoms that presented an individual when that person has suddenly come from one socio-economic group and jumps to a much higher one. That sudden shift can be a massive stress to the individual and cause him to maladapt in specific ways.
- The maladapt or the ability to deal with the sudden changed of circumstances is what leads to all the difficulties and problems exacerbated by the presence of their wealth.
- The first challenge is getting the indivdual’s trust. The world become threatening to them so this avoidance behaviour strategies, one of which is addiction.
- The second cluster encountered are the people with arousal symptoms. Not sexual but the person can’t soothe or calm themselves. They swing to high levels of anxiety or aggression, agitated, irritable or elevated nervous state. A neurological collapse and taking of anti-depressant drugs.
- The third is intrusive recollecting thoughts that they can’t get rid of.
- The fourth is their belief system becomes fractured and the person doesn’t have a stable view of themselves in relation to the world and other people.
- Last is desirably physically ill coming with a long list of disorders. The physical symptoms relate to overactivationof the immune and inflammatory systems.
- People with Sudden Wealth Syndrome score fairly high in these 5 domains.

- The Triphasic first mentioned in 1991 by Psychiatrist Judith Herman in her book Trauma and Recovery. She outlined the Triphasic model for treating trauma and was also utilized in the treatment of addiction because of the strong link and cross over between the two.
- Triphasic model says that there are 3 distinct phases in individuals with trauma.
- First phase is Stabilization which deals with the person’s present.
- Second phase is Reprocessing which deals with the person’s past.
- Third phase is Re-interation which deals with the person’s future.
