Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: The importance of civil discourse
[1:26] – Milan shares something that he believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- You need to release your ego to become successful.
[1:58] – What does it mean to maintain civil discourse in today’s world?
- Civil discourse is this idea that the majority of conversation should be focused around finding common ground with the people we’re conversing with.
- It is approaching conversations with the willingness to understand other people’s perspectives better so that we can create common ground and have a progressive society.
[2:35] – Most people hate confrontation. Why is it important for people to engage in civil discourse with those who have different views?
- Confrontation is an inevitable part of our lives. What makes humans really unique is our ability to connect and collaborate to compound greatness.
- At every point in life there will be conflicts with humans, and not getting scared and showing up confidently and having the courage to take them on correctly, that’s what’s important.
[3:58] – The problem with only spending time and hanging out with people who have the exact same views as yourself.
- Diversity is important. Having different opinions that are going to question and bring new ideas – and conversing with those who aren’t afraid to bring a different perspective – is what makes the team stronger.
[5:03] – The biggest challenges to not just maintaining civility in online interactions and social media, but really improving these online interactions.
- If you’re going in trying to understand people better, civil discourse advocates for having very clear intention in why you’re engaging in conversation with someone.
- On social media, we miss the nuance. We miss that intention because we’re not getting emotion there.
- Listening on social media is really important. Instead of just jumping in with your opinion, honestly go in and scroll through the comments.
- TikTok has done really well. Some of these features, like duetting content, where you can just jump in and show your face and give some sort of emotional response, is a =more human way of interacting with people digitally.

[10:18] – Some people find social media and the anonymous nature of it very divisive. What is the path toward bringing people together?
- Some of these perspectives – ones that are sometimes dark or sad or just very different and unique – can spark a lot of civil discourse, connection and common ground and understanding with people who we normally wouldn’t interact with.
[12:48] – How do we effectively communicate?
- Try to crush your ego as much as you can in conversation, because a lot of what creates uncivil conversation is this need to be right.
- Experiences from our lives have biased us towards this point and not wanting to hear someone else’s perspective, and that can create a lot of division and divisiveness.
- Enter into conversations with this practice of active listening to what someone else is saying because you’re curious, inquisitive, and you want to understand how they arrived at the perspectives they have.
[15:06] – The role of education in promoting civil discourse.
- Learn through stories and other people’s mistakes so you can prevent your own and level up quickly.
- Be this excellent communicative person in your personal life.
[16:56] – Milan talks about his book I’m Just Saying.
[18:28] – Milan’s key takeaway and call to action.
- Create a world that embraces civil discourse by inspiring people through your actions.
- The way you show up to conversations, whether they’re digital, or in person, is what will change the world and inspire other people to be better in their conversations and to create a solutions-oriented world.
