Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: Convict to Closer, The Reinvention of Sales Training with Luke Lunkenheimer
[1:27] – Luke shares some things he believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- He believes that sales aren’t as hard as many people think, you do not need to be a smooth talker to succeed in sales.
[2:10] – What did you learn from your intense experiences?
- The biggest lesson he took away from his experiences is that anyone can succeed. Growing up in a small town with limited opportunities, he was fortunate to receive a scholarship that opened doors for him.
- Despite facing numerous barriers and negative experiences, including homelessness and prison, he realized that with the right network and influences, anyone can turn their life around. He learned the power of surrounding oneself with positive influences and adjusting his mindset towards optimism and hard work.
- He used to believe success was reserved for those with privileged backgrounds or special connections, but he discovered that success comes from perseverance, hard work, and building the right relationships.
[6:07] – Luke talks about the old way of selling and its flaws.
- He is deeply passionate about sales, having learned the traditional approach at a car dealership. This method involves greeting, qualifying, showcasing product features and benefits, and overcoming objections using pre-prepared word tracks. However, he sees a problem with this approach, as it often leads to robotic sales interactions that do not truly address customer needs. Instead, he advocates for a different approach called “pain to persuade” selling.
- This method focuses on deeply understanding the customer through compassionate interrogation, rather than immediately showcasing products or services.
- By truly understanding the customer’s needs and desires, salespeople can provide solutions that resonate and ultimately lead to successful sales.

[13:05] – Luke shares about The Paid 2 Persuade discipline.
- He is passionate about the “pain to persuade” discipline of sales, emphasizing that it is not just a system to sell, but a mindset and behavior.
- Unlike other sales methods that focus on replicating success stories, “pain to persuade” prioritizes understanding the customer’s needs deeply through what he calls the “Big Three”: what brought you, your buying power, and your goals.
- This method goes beyond surface-level questions to truly empathize with the customer’s situation and optimize for their time and needs.
- By understanding the customer’s situation thoroughly, salespeople can efficiently guide them toward a successful purchase.
[18:14] – How do you train people to be confident and close every closable deal while optimizing for efficiency?
- When businesses or individuals fully engage with the “pain to persuade” discipline, they often see a significant increase in their financial outcomes, sometimes even tripling their initial results.
- In a business-to-business setting, like training an aftermarket automotive products company, results can be remarkable, with a guarantee of a 10% increase in revenue just by being in the system and actively participating.
- For individuals in sales roles, whether door-to-door or in tangible asset or service sales, the guarantee jumps to a 20% monetary increase year over year.
- This success is not about the individual but about the transformative power of the system. This concept is akin to how Steve Jobs revolutionized communication with the iPhone, changing the way we interact with technology.
- Steve Jobs had a unique vision that set him apart, and while he doesn’t compare himself to Jobs, he stumbled upon a breakthrough in his car dealership days. As business boomed, he found a way to maximize efficiency by asking customers key questions upfront, optimizing their time, and assessing their buying power.
- This method tripled their sales. Over time, he refined this approach, realizing it wasn’t about individual talent but about the method itself. After validating it with new hires who also saw drastic improvements, he knew he had something powerful.
- The core of the method is The “big three” questions, compassionate interrogation, and sticking to a flow of fundamental, logical, and obvious points.
