Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: Problem-Solving Power Tips
[1:13] – Josh shares something that he believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- Most people are not very good at problem solving, even entrepreneurs. A 20% improvement in problem solving skills will equate to doubling or tripling your value.
[1:50] – Josh tells why he believes that problem solving is not just the most important aspect of business but it is life itself.
- Problem solving is life itself because all human activity involves problem solving even the involuntary processes (breathing, sleeping, eating, etc). When you solve problems for other people and when other people solve the problems for you, the world becomes a better place.
- Over the last decade, he developed processes and tips for problem solving that he hopes will be interesting and valuable to others.
[3:45] – Josh talks about the first step of problem solving.
- Problem solving is a skill and anyone can learn the techniques and processes to get better. This skill will translate to all the other things in life, in business as an entrepreneur and in all other important relationships.
- Being aware of the obvious is a key entrepreneurial trait. The first power tip is don’t waste your time trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist. Instead of going forward, you go backwards and create other problems by doing work that doesn’t solve any problem.
[7:14] – Josh give the second power tip to problem solving.
- Don’t confuse the problem with the symptom. Identifying the problem is a skill and an art form that you can improve.
- The mistake that people usually make is when they see a problem , they see other few problems and they go after the symptoms and spend time solving it and have difficulty making progress instead of identifying the deeper and bigger problem or the root problem.

[13:20] – Josh gives the second step of problem solving.
- The next step is the process of problem solving and that is Brainstorm Phase. It is making a list of solution or a list of ideas and options. One power tip in brainstorming is there is no criticizing no matter how absurd or crazy the idea is, it gets added to the list. Never critique, just offer better options.
- Add some collaborative formats or documents to make the process of brainstorming quick.
[16:58] – Josh talks about the third step.
- The third step is the Playoffs where you take an option and another option and see all the pros and cons. A very important power tip for playoffs is its an idea vs an idea not a person vs a person. Too often people take it personally when people criticizes their idea but once you put your idea on the hill, its not your idea anymore and stands on its own against another idea. It is also important to have 2 ideas against each other than 10 ideas.
- Another power tip is never leave the hill empty. There should always be an option up there to pick no matter how dumb it is. You can always come up with a better idea during the playoffs.
[18:38] – Josh gives his one key takeaway.
- Problem solving is the key to success in entrepreneurship, marriage, raising kids, friendships, relationships and every other part of life.
[19:00] – Call to action.
