Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: The SUPERHIGHWAY to Personal Branding
[1:24] – Ashley shares something that she believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- She believes that there are no shortcuts to success. Real success takes hard work.
[2:08] – Ashley talk about her shift from the hallowed halls of the Pentagon to a career coach and speaker.
- She was in Pentagon National Security when 9/11 happened. She learned that when you follow what feels right for your purpose, usually what’s right for you is just in front of you or within the periphery and in her case, on the periphery of National Security.
- She was an incredible job seeker and she got offered 3 more jobs as a negotiator apart from her work in Pentagon and tripled her salary. Later she became a career coach where she has online courses, books and You Turn podcast. National Security got her in the career coaching.
[4:08] – Ashley talks about how TEDx talks impacted her career and why she believe they are a superhighway for building personal brands.
- Her career coaching business was totally transformed not only by becoming an author but also by giving 2 TED talks that became viral. The first was when she got an award for her work in National Security under Obama administration, a woman recommended her at TEDx.
- She ended up earning a million dollars in private coaching revenue directly tied to the TEDx talks and this opened her eyes to the power of personal brand.
[6:52] –Ashley talks about the mistakes people make over and over again when trying to build their personal brand.
- The internet is like a bunch of islands and when you think about your brands you have to think that each platform is an island (e.g. TikTok island, Instagram island, Podcast island).
- It is critical to pay attention to these islands because the mistakes that people make is they want to be everywhere or omnipresent and she learned that people who have the strongest brands looks at it as a layer cake where they established first in one island before moving on to the next.
- You want to pick the island that matches your skill sets. Don’t do what you love, do what you are. You have to honor your skills more than you are passionate about.
- Think about your customers, honor your skill sets and find the right place for you in building your brand.

[13:55] – Ashley shares her top tips to someone who is looking to make a significant career change or advancement.
- When you feel disconnected, the first order of business is to get back into connection with yourself.
- People get uncomfortable with transition so they grab on to things. They think they are moving forward but they are moving backward.
- It takes years for an elegant idea to come through. By taking a step back in her business, simplifying and allowing space in her life, elegant ideas come to find her.
- She gave another TEDx talk in 2019 and she knew it will become viral and will change her life and those who will listen. True enough after 6 months it got her in a speaking tour, tripled her fees and multiple book deals. A lot happened to her because she was able to transition and not grabbed to her next identity.
- When you are in transition, there’s power in having part time jobs.
[18:39] – Ashley shares a success story of someone she coached through a TEDx talk and how it transformed their career.
- Her favorite clients are those who doesn’t have a brand. She learned that clients who don’t have a brand but has expertise are the ones with the most leverage.
- One client is a doctor with a cutting edge research in obesity. She helped him by working on his talk about his life story and why he wanted to be a doctor to help people especially those who are obese. He ended up having to give his talk on TEDx, got him 3 book deal offers, created an online program with a membership of more than 2000 people and it also became viral.
- Going viral is not easy but it is simple, Simply write the best talk of your life and practice it until you memorized every word.
[22:55] – Ashley shares her coaching style.
- Good speech writers realize that the opening of the talk is the top hat and moving the audience outside the title of your speech you give contributes to the virality.
- The job of the speech writer is to draw the tie between the story and the opener that will get the most attention. In her talk, the opener is “I was kidnapped” but the theme of the talk is how to figure what you really want.
- You got to know how to weave the story and you can get a writer to help you do it.
- Her quote “I was kidnapped” was actually a scam and she related it to people who are choosing their career paths out of fear and panic and kidnap themselves from the life they want to a life they don’t want.
