Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: Hacks for Networking as an Entrepreneur with Arjun Rai
[1:22] – Arjun shares something he believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- He believes that balancing work and personal life is necessary at some point in the future. However, when you compete with the most prominent players in the industry, it can be challenging to prioritize this balance.
[2:29] – Arjun shares the hack of getting into networking events via negotiations.
- In college, he frequently used his student card to his advantage.
- He would approach people like, “Hey, I’m a student. Can I volunteer at your event?” or “I have a great startup idea. Can I present it briefly on your stage or show?” He would negotiate to get ahead instead of accepting what was initially offered.
- Another strategy was attending events at the last minute and talking to the manager, saying, “I’m a young entrepreneur. Are there any available discounts?”
- It all boils down to the power of asking for what you want.
[4:00] – Arjun believes there is power in a selfie regarding networking and cold-calling post-event.
- The reason behind this shift was attending networking events, taking photos with people, and then struggling to remember who they were afterward.
- He had business cards but did not know who matched which face in the pictures.
- He manually sent these photos with messages to remind them of their meeting.
- This process was time-consuming. Hence, they developed a simple app that takes a selfie, gathers the person’s information, auto-generates a message, sends it via text and email with the selfie, and follows up a week later.
- It is a warm and personal way to reconnect after meeting someone at an event.
[6:09] – Arjun talks about the hack of where to sit at an event to maximize your ROI.
- He often likes to bend the rules a bit.
- For example, if there is a VIP or reserved area, he might move a piece of paper and sit there.
- Most people do not mind, especially if you play the young entrepreneur card. It can lead to valuable connections.
- Arjun suggests sitting in the aisles instead of the middle rows at events so you can move around quickly.
- During sessions, standing in the back of the room allows you to network with like-minded individuals, as the speakers often do the same.
- Additionally, he wears branded shirts with his podcast logo everywhere, front, back, and sleeves, which helps people recognize him and start conversations.
- It is a small investment that can pay off in networking opportunities.

[13:06] – What is your hack around eating to maximize our chances of higher ROI?
- Use food delivery services like Uber Eats, GrubHub, or Seamless, primarily during conferences.
- Conference catering can often be subpar, making it hard to network while people eat.
- For example, if lunch is scheduled from 12 to 2, he will have UberEATS deliver his lunch at [11:30]. This way, he can eat before the official lunch hour and use that time to network and pitch his ideas to others who are also done eating.
- He found that people are more receptive to conversations when not focused on their meals.
- He keeps snacks in his bag or pocket to avoid feeling hungry, and he also carries natural breath mints for fresh breath, which can be crucial during networking events.
[16:01] – Arjun shares some real-world stories and examples of success networking at events.
- He met Rudy, a well-known figure on Instagram who always wears red, at the Grant Cardone conference called Growth Con about a year ago. It was a chance encounter in the bathroom.
- He recognized him but did not want to be weird. Arjun waited for him to introduce himself. They took a selfie, exchanged contact info, and connected later.
- It is all about being open to opportunities and putting yourself out there.
[18:39] – What is SelfTact, and how does it help bring people together with brilliant selfies?
- They originally developed the app just for Arjun and his developer. They were the only ones in the world using it. But people saw it and expressed interest when attending mastermind meetings and conferences.
- It was not available for others at that time. So he asked them what they would be willing to pay for it and how to use it.
- To their surprise, many people wanted it. Today, they have almost 1,000 members, even without any marketing efforts.
[21:29] – Arjun’s key takeaway.
- When it comes to in-person events, especially in San Francisco and the Bay Area where they are often located, it is essential to be the center of attention.
- You never know where you and other individuals might be in the future.
- It is a way to capture lasting memories from your networking experiences.
