- Your story is the key that connects your life’s experiences to your life’s work. It serves as the foundation for everything you do.
- By exploring your story, you can discover the framework for your brand and the offers you create. It helps you define your messaging, clarify your purpose, and fuel your drive and passion.
- The power of storytelling lies in its ability to make people remember you and create a strong connection and credibility.
[4:11] – What would you tell people listening who may feel like their life story doesn’t connect to their work?
- It is essential to understand that there is a deeper connection between your life experiences and the essence of your work.
- For example, one of Chantelle’s clients discovered that her immigration story influenced her desire to build online communities as a social media manager.
- By exploring the more profound significance of your story, you can find meaningful connections and bring a greater sense of purpose and impact to what you do.
- When JLD gives presentations to large audiences ranging from 200 to over 4000 people, he aims to provide valuable strategies, and tools. However, what truly sticks with people is often his personal story about his deployment to Iraq and the loss of soldiers in his platoon.
- Even years later, people remember that story and its impact. It resonates with them and becomes a powerful memory.
[7:04] – Chantelle discusses how a great framework makes for a great story.
- The 6-part Framework:

- Share a breakdown moment.

[14:39]: Chantelle: What do you feel about the work you are here to do?
- JLD: To help impact others through the genius of the guests on the show.
[14:45] – Chantelle: Reflecting on your stories, you often miss critical details due to your closeness to them. Can you share a glimpse of yourself as a little boy and the significant catalyst moments in your life?
- JLD: One of his earliest catalyst moments was around six. His elementary school was within walking distance of his house, and he vividly remembers his pride and independence as he walked to school. It was a significant moment of responsibility when he could leave home without parental supervision and arrive where he was supposed to be.
[16:14] – Chantelle: Discuss any other significant moments that stand out to you in your journey from childhood to the present.
- JLD: Another significant moment that stands out to JLD was when he was 29 years old, living in New York City and feeling dissatisfied with his job and the miserable weather.
- He walked into a Hollister clothing store and saw live footage on a giant TV screen of people enjoying themselves, surfing, playing volleyball, and biking in Manhattan Beach, California.
- It hit him that others lived their lives to the fullest while he was stuck in a dark, cold apartment.
- At that moment, he decided to quit his job, pack his car, and drive to Southern California without a clear plan.
- Fast forward, he ended up in San Diego’s Pacific Beach area, where fate brought him together with his now-wife, business partner, and the mother of his soon-to-be child, Kate Lynn Erickson.
- JLD leaped and moved to Southern California without a job or familiar faces. He embraced the unknown and ventured forward.
[19:30] – Chantelle: What are the most important lessons you feel you have learned that you want to relate to your audience and those listening?
- JLD: Fortune favors the bold.
- One of his biggest lessons is the importance of providing value to others.
