3 Value Bombs
1) MLMs prey on hope – the hope that you can be in that small percentage of people who succeed. They also amplify the stories of the people at the top, so, it seems like the success is more widely available than it really is.
2) Everybody who is in an MLM is a victim before they come become a perpetrator. It’s the system that’s flawed, not the people.
3) Just ask questions, don’t judge, but try and get that critical thinking to come back online. If you want to be supportive of your friends or family who are in these schemes, the best way to be supportive is by being a soft place to land.

Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: The Dark Side of Multilevel Marketing: Women Selling Their Houses, Judging Each Other, and More.
[1:09] – Emily shares something that she believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- A lot of people are afraid to share their skeletons. Being vulnerable and sharing the things you’re not so proud of might lead you to the people and things that will help you get to a place of success that you’ve always wanted.
[1:53] – What is an MLM and why do people get roped into these schemes?
- Multilevel marketing is a corporation that employs a multilevel selling system, which means that people sell products to their friends and recruit others to join the company.
- It can become predatory because you really are just recruiting people to sell the same thing in an already saturated market. It has a 99.7% loss rate. Only 0.3% of people will actually make money.
[2:53] – Why are people still getting stuck in what can only be described as a failing system?
- MLMs prey on hope – the hope that you could be that small percentage of people who succeed.
- As a society, we don’t build in villages anymore.
- MLMs, regardless of having a huge loss rate, are an almost $200 billion industry.
[5:56] – Social media’s role in people getting sucked into MLMs.
- That fear of missing out – seeing the pretty filtered pictures when that’s not really the whole picture.
- Consumers are getting smarter, understanding a little bit more about what the deal is with MLMs.

[10:06] – Emily talks about one of the companies people usually get roped into.
- You are recruiting in the market of the same people who live in your area geographically.
- One reason that is dangerous is that you don’t have the same protections as any other company, like when you franchise a McDonald’s.
- As you go down the pyramid, the people who join have less and less ability to obtain success because the market is so saturated.
- The real danger in these schemes is that the only people who succeed are the people who get in early.
[13:46] – How do these MLM schemes stay in operation?
- There are legal pyramid schemes that the government not only supports, but they protect. Lobbyists and politicians are all tied up in MLM’s and they take money from them or they take money from the Direct Selling Association.
- The industry as a whole stays in business because so many people in the government benefit from them.
[15:59] – Supporting a victim of MLMs.
- When people are in an MLM, they’re probably the victim of a lot of undue influence.
- They will probably be defensive if you show any disapproval of what they’re doing
- Just ask questions, don’t judge, but try and get that critical thinking to come back online.
[19:27] – Emily’s key takeaway and call to action.
- Everybody who is in an MLM is a victim before they come become a perpetrator. It’s the system that’s flawed – not people.
