Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: Why Healing & Wholeness Must Be at The Center of Building Lasting Emotional Intelligence with Scott Allender
[1:37] – Scott shares something he believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- He believes that the most successful individuals deeply connect with their authentic selves, understand what they truly want, and align their pursuits with those values.
[3:24] – What is EQ, and why does EQ matter more than your skills, knowledge, or experiences?
- EQ is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions and the emotions of those around you.
- EQ is crucial for success, as high IQ and skills may not be enough without emotional intelligence.
- Over 70% of success or failure can be attributed to emotional intelligence.
- The ability to feel your feelings and interpret their messages is crucial to EQ.
[5:42] – When developing our emotional intelligence, what are we getting wrong?
- Scott believes that traditional approaches to emotional intelligence can be too logical and rational and may not address the underlying emotional experiences that drive behavior.
- Instead, they suggest a personality-driven approach to develop a more balanced and self-aware dynamic intelligence profile.
- Developing interoceptive sensitivity involves understanding the signals that come from your body and how they contribute to your emotional responses.
[8:23] – JLD’s Enneagram is 8, a challenger.
[8:54] – How can the enneagram help us become more self-aware?
- The Enneagram is a personality typing system that identifies nine types, each motivated by a different need.
- 9 Personality Typing System:
-
- Motivated by a need to perfect themselves and the world around them.
- Motivated by a need to please others to feel liked and wanted.
- Motivated by the need to be successful or appear successful at all costs and avoid failure at all costs.
- Motivated by a need to be unique and special.
- Motivated by a need to be competent and have knowledge and be able to guard themselves against threats of the world.
- Motivated by a need to try to feel safe through questioning and risk assessment and trying to protect themselves and others.
- Motivated by a need to be without limitations and constricted in any way.
- Motivated by a need to avoid being controlled by other people, and therefore avoid any vulnerability and motivated thus by the need to be strong and appear strong.
- Motivated by a need to avoid conflict at all costs.
- The Enneagram explains the unconscious stories and wounding messages that inform your ego responses and gives you a map to move beyond your type and access other types for personal growth and transcendence.

[15:47] – Scott explains why it is essential to understand how other people perceive the world to achieve success more quickly.
- The Enneagram teaches you that there are at least 9 different ways people see the world, and an advanced study includes 27 different ways.
- Understanding your perspective and how others see and feel about things is essential to communicate effectively and building stronger relationships.
- The point of self-awareness isn’t just to acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, but to grow past the limitations of your egos and understand others better.
[17:40] – How can you value your emotions and instincts more in the real world?
- In organizations, emotions are often dismissed as hindrances to rationality, but that is only a problem if you ignore or deny them.
- Emotions are essential, providing the information you cannot get through rational processing alone.
- By normalizing feelings and checking in with team members about their emotions, you can bring them into conscious awareness and better understand how they affect your behavior.
[20:30] – Scott’s takeaway
- Your body, heart, and brain all provide valid information; integrating them is essential rather than favoring one.
- Practices like mindfulness, meditation, body scans, breath work, and yoga can help realign these elements and improve well-being and success.
