2) Create focus. Attain clarity about your family life and business life. Understand them as independent dynamics that actually have a dependency on one another at the same time.
3) When you are positioned to achieve mastery and you start leveraging these keys, what happens is you understand the value of not only what your treasure is, but where that treasure lies.

Boom. Shake the room, Fire Nation, JLD here and welcome to Entrepreneurs on Fire, brought to you by the HubSpot Podcast Network with great shows like Duct Tape Marketing. Today we'll be breaking down how to eliminate family life crashing and burning for CEOs, business owners and executives. To drop these value bombs I have brought Leo Simpson into EO Fire Studios. Leo is a six-time author, an adjunct professor of business and the family business life mastery coach. He helps CEOs, business owners, and executives eliminate family life crashing and burning. And today Fire Nation will talk about the three misleading beliefs around this topic and bust and miss. We'll talk about achieving mastery in family, life and business and so much more.
0 (44s):
And a big thank you for sponsoring today's episode goes to Leo and our sponsors Outbound Squad, hosted by Jason Bay is brought to you by the HubSpot Podcast Network, the audio destination for business professionals. Tune in for convos with leading sales experts and top performing reps to help you land more meetings with your ideal clients. One of my faves, The Monthly app with Jason Ethan, where they share hacks, tips and tricks. Listen to Outbound Squad wherever you get your podcasts. Leo, say What's up to Fire Nation and share something that you believe about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
1 (1m 22s):
What's up Fire Nation pleasure and privilege to be with you guys? You know, I think that something that people disagree with regarding success is more of it's a disagreement because of a misconception or a superficial ideal. And that is that success is something based on the things we have as results and outcomes and achievements and the things that are materially visible. And the reason I say that is because you gotta kind of go back to a definition of success, like a very raw and rich definition. And the best one I've found comes from Earl Nightingale, and that is success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.
1 (2m 11s):
And I'm a data guy, I have a background in accounting and research and one of the interesting parts is even though you're looking at the data, the output, what it's saying, in order to understand what the true value is, you gotta go look at what the reason was for doing what you do. And that's the same thing when it comes to success. We might get results, we might get data, we might get some things happening, some outcomes. But if we don't know why we were doing it and what the purpose, we can't really know if we've really achieved success, especially when it comes to a worthy ideal.
0 (2m 43s):
I love that quote for a lot of reasons. And the two key words in that quote, in my opinion, is progressive and worthy. So what people need to realize is it's not about the realization of an ideal, it's not about getting to the finish line of some ideal you have. It's about getting to the progressive realization, not just of any ideal but of a worthy ideal. That's the key with that quote. And I love that in Fire Nation, we're gonna be talking today about eliminating family life crashing and burning for CEOs, business owners and executives. And when you hear Leo about wildly successful business owners or CEOs, you usually know their home life is a mess.
0 (3m 30s):
So why is a messy family life combined with a thriving business life such a problem?
1 (3m 37s):
That's a powerful question. JLD, well it's not just one reason, this is the case, it's actually three and it's based on three misleading beliefs and the first one is trying to achieve balance. Okay? The second one is making one more important than the other. And the third is not knowing the relationship between family life and business life. And let me give you some specific detail on each one. When you're trying to achieve balance with something, you gotta understand the nature of the things you're balancing in order to make sure that you're measuring appropriately. Remember I said I'm a data guy and an accounting guy. And so there's certain things that you measure in certain ways.
1 (4m 21s):
You can't measure quantitative things in many instances the same way you measure qualitative things. So it's the same thing with family life and business life. If you take them and separate them, which separation is not the issue, it's more so how you're measuring, you put 'em on different sides on a scale which is a certain type of measurement, and you're trying to achieve a certain amount of time, energy, effort in each and an equal manner where they balance. It's impossible because in many instances we're gonna spend more time working on our business in many instances than we do with our family. Then there are times where we're spending more time with the family that we are in the business and it just creates this chaos frustration.
1 (5m 1s):
The other side is trying to pit them against one another is not too good either when you're trying to make one more important than the other. Because that's where you start thinking, Hey, you know, I think my business life is funding my family life and it's not really, you know, reciprocating because there's a misbelief about it. And here's the third one. When you don't understand the relationship between the two, it creates chaos and frustration because you're trying to balance something that's not able to be balanced and you're trying to position something as far as choosing between it that's not capable of being chosen between. There's a unique relationship between these two and we're gonna talk about it.
0 (5m 40s):
Well, I do wanna talk about it because you're talking about these three misleading beliefs and you know, we really want to go deep on busting some of these beliefs so that our listeners can really start to kind of build the foundation that they need to build both a thriving business life and a thriving family life. Because it is possible if they have the tools. So take it away.
1 (6m 6s):
Absolutely, man. So just like there are three misleading beliefs, there are three accurate beliefs and they correspond to each one. So instead of trying to achieve balance, which is not possible for family life and business life achieve flow, okay, when I say achieve flow, you can have them separated, but when you have a circle and you have two different points on that circle, guess what? It doesn't matter really where it is on that circle. One thing is going to flow out into the other and the other's gonna receive and flow out into the other just like the other did. So you've got to position family life and business life to be aligned, not balanced, not weighed, but aligned so that there's flow.
1 (6m 50s):
The second accurate belief is actually related to making fuel. Here's what I mean by that. So think about a fire, right? If your house is on fire, that means the fire is uncontrolled out of control and it's just frustrating, it's just problematic. But I asked my wife this question the other day. I said, can you have a fire in a house and it'd be good? And she said No. I said, you sure? And as we talked about it more, she's like, well, yeah you can cuz you can have the stove going, you can have the fireplace going, you can have a candle going. When you actually have fire, heat, substance that can actually be destructive in a contained manner, it can actually produce value.
1 (7m 31s):
And that's what you want to do with family life and business life is actually position them to where they can fuel one another. And that's easily attainable when you achieve flow. And the third one is create focus. In other words, attain clarity about family life and business life. Too often we separate them only to think about them independently rather than think about them independently. And when you understand them as independent dynamics that actually have a dependency on one another at the same time, then you can understand why they feel one another and why they actually create flow. That is the essence of the accurate beliefs that destroy those misleading beliefs.
0 (8m 14s):
So I love that you keep using the word flow because it's such a powerful word and concept and something great to really be gearing up to achieving as we kind of go through life here. Now, before we move on, can you just really quickly just state those misleading beliefs in the accurate beliefs, just one more time as kind of a quick refresher. Just bang, bang, bang.
1 (8m 38s):
Absolutely misleading beliefs, trying to balance making one more important than the other and not knowing the relationship between the two. The accurate beliefs, achieve flow, make fuel, create focus.
0 (8m 52s):
Fire Nation, if you weren't taking notes before, I hope you were just then because that was laid out clearly indefinitely. And those are some key concepts to really sit down and think about. And we have a lot more to talk about all around this topic when we get back from thanking our sponsors. Leo, we're back and Fire Nation, they're listening to this interview right now and by doing so, they are already self-selecting themselves as people that are ready to achieve mastery, both in family life and business life. They want this, they're listening to you, they're absorbing it, they're taking notes.
0 (10m 20s):
What do we do today?
1 (10m 23s):
One of the things that's important is first and foremost, when you have these accurate beliefs and these misleading beliefs very clearly delineated, it positions you to be in this place where you can actually build mastery. I like to liken it too. You're actually being brought into the front of a building called mastery where you have this posture now of you believe that this is possible, you know that this is possible. Then you understand there's this parody between family life and business life, that though they have uniqueness within the context of them, you know that they provide value, flow, fuel and clarity that makes it so unique in what you can experience.
1 (11m 9s):
And then the last thing is your passion is reunited. Reignited is really what I'm trying to say for these two elements. It creates this beautiful thing. And see, this is why I talk about that building called mastery. Because what happens is you were in an environment that was just chaotic, frustrating, disruptive, just and, and it seems like it was just confining. Well a building is a confinement as well. But the reality is when you get into a building that's defined to give you value and to provide you value becomes a protective structure. And when you achieve mastery, but more so in this case, you position yourself to achieve mastery, now you have this new view, this new look on what it is that you can actually attack within the context of family life and business life.
0 (12m 1s):
Wow, Fire Nation getting some chills because if I can create the type of life that Leo's talking about, then we can start to think about entering this state of flow that is such a great place to be. And let's just say, and let's just assume, Leo, that we are ready to follow this advice that we are ready to achieve family and business life mastery. What does that look like? Like what does that look like on that ethereal plane?
1 (12m 28s):
Okay, so there are two things that it looks like. One, it looks like leveraging and making use of being powerful with the three master keys as it pertains to eliminating family life crashing and burning. I'll give a brief perspective about that in just a moment. But the other thing that it looks like as the outcome, as that, that true success that we talked about at the beginning, that progressive realization of that worthy ideal, it looks like increased productivity, not just in business, not just in family, but within the context of the clarity of really where your greatest effectiveness is. It looks like more profitability because the focus that you get from achieving mastery positions you to actually have very intentional focus of those things you achieve and what you get from it, be it marginal related to profit or be it related to the volume of things you get.
1 (13m 22s):
But the biggest thing is you get peace. And a lot of people don't think about peace in the way the historical perspective does. The opposite of peace is war. And when you're in a position to where family life is crashing and burning and business life is thriving and vibing, you are in a state of warfare within the context of your own existence and that is disruptive. But when you start getting this piece, oh man, it gets really exciting because now you see with the lens of uniqueness and beauty. Okay, so when it comes to those three master keys, very important. I'm not gonna go into too much detail, but I want you to see the the depth of it.
1 (14m 2s):
When you are positioned to achieve mastery and you start leveraging these keys, what happens is you understand the value of not only what your treasure is, but where that treasure lies. You know, it's an old text that actually says, were your treasures, that were your heartbeat. Also, when you have these accurate beliefs leading you now they are treasured in your heart and they are now influencing how you engage such that you begin to translate the success and achievement you're having in business to family life. I like to use this example where my wife used to always talk about, I need this, I need that. And I used to get frustrated by it. And the reality was one day, because I'm a research guy and my frustration, I was like, what's your definition of need?
1 (14m 48s):
And she tells me, and after she shares with me, I said, let me get this straight. Are you telling me that there's something you seek to achieve and you start with what you have, but everything in between there that you don't have is what you need? She was like, absolutely. I just burst out crying because I realized I hadn't translated from the business world where I was successful into the family life, the thing that was fundamental to our progression. There was no peace there as a result. And then when it comes to the last master key, trust and trust deals with confidence. When you understand what your misleading beliefs are, what your accurate beliefs are, and the keys that help you achieve that mastery, then what happens is you operate predictably in the context of the achievement of family business, life mastery,
0 (15m 41s):
Fire Nation, powerful words from somebody who's been there and done that. And Leo, with everything we've talked about here is today, what would you say is the one key takeaway you really wanna make sure our listeners get from our entire conversation?
