3 Value Bombs
1) If you want to be able to get paid to speak, you have to build the credibility and stand out from other people so they pay you.
2) If you’re that person who’s nervous or terrified of public speaking, it’s really important to work with the right person. It’s important to get a good coach or a mentor or somebody who can help you do it the right way.
3) If you’re an entrepreneur, or you have a cause or a message you want to get out there, then there’s nothing quite like getting on a stage in terms of credibility and reach.

0 (1m 30s):
Corey, say What's up to Fire Nation and share something that you believe about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
1 (1m 38s):
First of all, thank you so much, John. Hello, Fire Nation. I am super stoked to be here. I've been looking forward to this for a couple of weeks now, maybe a bit longer. And you know, I guess for me and John, you and I have chatted with this before. I've done thousands of interviews with top thought leaders. So I've had this, I'm gonna say blessed opportunity to find out some of the common traits that they share. And one of the things that I noticed that they have in common with each other is they believe in hard work. But at the same time, I feel like because we hear that so often, the average person thinks that's what it takes to be successful is strictly hard work.
1 (2m 18s):
And what I've learned is that smart work, actually in 99% of the cases outpaces hard work. So I think most people disagree with, or at least they, they think that it's about hard work. And yes, hard work helps. And yes, it's important to work hard, but if you love what you do, it's not really work. And at the same time, if you know how to work smart, that again, every day of the week, I think Trump's hard work.
0 (2m 42s):
I love that. I have a big saying that I go back to all the time is that going a million miles an hour in the wrong direction is getting you a million miles in the wrong direction. And that's what a lot of people are doing. They're just working so hard, hard, hard. They're spinning their wheels a million miles an hour, but they're literally going nowhere. But it's that person that's pointing in the right direction and plotting along at the right pace. Those are people that are succeeding time and time again and Fire Nation, both myself and Corey have been doing this for a long, long time. I have over 3,700 interviews for entrepreneurs on fire. Corey has thousands and thousands of interviews both on his show and other shows, and that's why he's a great person to bring this topic to life today, how to speak, write an interview, guest Your Way to Millions.
0 (3m 32s):
And I wanna start off by talking about getting paid to speak because a lot of people, Corey, they do dream about getting paid to speak, but is it possible to actually get paid money to speak without selling from a stage?
1 (3m 47s):
John, I can answer this from firsthand experience. I, I started speaking 22 ish years ago and I started my journey, well, here's the thing. I didn't know that you weren't supposed to get paid to speak for showing up. And as they say, sometimes ignorance is bliss. So multiple years later, speaker said to me, wait a minute, you, you're not supposed to be charging that early. And I'm like, do you want me to give the money back? What? What do you mean? And I didn't know there was a a codebook or anything, but for me, I started in speaking 20 some years ago. I never started selling from a stage until about five, six years ago. And I never made less than six figures, most often multiple six figures or more in all of those years and never once sold from a stage for about 15 years.
1 (4m 33s):
So the answer is of course, unequivocally that you can get paid without having to sell from a stage. In fact, I helped students with that all the time because that's a struggle. Some people don't like the idea of selling from a stage and so I help them with that. I also believe there is a place for selling from the stage, but I'll say this too, one of the other things about this is that if you want to be able to get paid to speak, I mean that's a whole of course discussion about how do you build the credibility so that a client will want to pay you? How do you stand out from other people so that clients will want to pay you? And I'm sure we'll talk about this, but the Blue Talk brand that we created, that's exactly why we created it, is to give people that extra edge or that extra credibility to be able to go to a client who says, well, I'd like to hire you to speak at our conference, but you know, I need to see some video.
1 (5m 22s):
And, and so what we're doing is we're bringing people to stages like at our events at stages like UCLA and Harvard and Columbia. And then to be able to have that video to show them, that's really how you start in my experience, getting paid to speak on a regular basis. So yes, it's very possible and at the same time, the more credibility you have going into it and the more proof, for example social proof or footage proof of you speaking and delivering a powerful message, the easier it becomes to do. So
0 (5m 50s):
I think this is a really important topic because I think a lot of people that don't really know much about selling from stage, they have this kind of perception that it's only a bad thing and that, you know, it's only with conferences that are just full of pitch fest after Pitch Fest after Pitch fest. And of course those do exist and people have had bad experiences there. But you know, I've actually been part of both sides of the equation where like I've actually just been paid to go give a talk, like to go give like a keynote presentation at a conference and just got paid to deliver straight value from stage. Then I've also had opportunities where I've been able to go to a great conference that's been delivering a ton of value and then I've been the featured speaker who's delivering a great offer from stage.
0 (6m 32s):
And so it's not like every single speaker's up there trying to pitch their wears, but they structure in a way where it's like, okay, now this speaker is going to be able to offer something really cool. And like what I've done, of course it makes a lot of sense with Podcasters Paradise, is I've offered these podcast Launch Accelerator courses where if people wanna sign up, then they can, boom, we'll go in and we'll get a, we'll have a four week intensive where we'll go through with a small group of people at a premium price point and we will get your podcast created, launched, and starting that growth trajectory in a very short timeframe. For a lot of people that's very appealing and they wanted to go down that path. So I've had success, like Cory's mentioned, I've actually had six figure sales from stages just like he has by doing things along those lines.
0 (7m 18s):
So there's right ways to do it and there's opportunities there at Fire Nation, there's obviously wrong ways to do it, there's wrong, wrong ways to do everything and that's what we're talking about here today. But, so once we do start kind of racking up some of these achievements, Corey, like we're speaking from stages, whether big or small, how can we start leveraging these opportunities, these achievements to get more stages, more opportunities?
1 (7m 41s):
This is probably where I've spent my, I wanna say the last probably six, seven years at least, obsessed with this, this idea of how to, how do we leverage this stuff? Like how do we actually, whenever we land, we see so many people they'll, they'll get to write for Forbes or entrepreneur or of course you know, John, you know this, we help people land TEDx talks just like speaking on our Blue Talk stages. And so how do you leverage it though? We see so many people that they'll go and land a TEDx or a Blue Talks or like I say write for Forbes or entrepreneur and then it just sits there in the dust. I've had many people say, well I went on this show and it didn't do anything.
1 (8m 21s):
And my question is always, and what did you do about it? Meaning like, what if you were on Good Morning America? Does anybody else know? Or just the people that watched the episode? So Good Morning America could have powerful leverage for your audience even if they don't ever tune into that show normally. And even if they don't watch the episode, if you let them know you're on there, which is why we see as seen on banners on all these websites. So, you know, one thing you can do is get on enough shows that you have enough logos to have an Ason banner so that when people go to your website it's says, as seen on Entrepreneurs on Fire as seen on Forbes as as Seen in Entrepreneur. And they, I've seen studies that have showed that that creates about 70% more credibility when somebody lands on your site seeing that.
1 (9m 6s):
And what I will say to it, John, is the proof I think is in the fact that people like Tony Robbins and Jack Canfield who only have so much real estate on that website and could put anything there, almost always have an as seen on banner or have at least as seen on and logos there. So, you know, one thing a person could be doing is again, getting those, those extra logos that you can put on the banner and create that banner. And so for example, when we're working with people helping them get their credibility out there, one of the things we'll do is help them figure out how to get on, even if it's 10 podcasts that are maybe just starting out or smaller so that they can at least get the banner done. Because yes, it'd be great to have it saying as seen on SuperSoul Sunday, but even having the banner is still gonna add credibility for you and, and kind of show people that the media sort of vetted you.
1 (9m 55s):
And so we work with people really quickly to get those logos so they can get a banner and then of course the banner. I mean you can design it on a site like Fiver or 99 Designs or one of them for next to nothing. You know, you can get it done for 20 or $30 and have this banner done realistically within a couple of weeks if you start approaching podcasts. Cuz as we know there's millions of podcasts, it's easy to, to get on some and enough to get a banner done. So first things I would say get get the the stuff you need to have a banner done and you can then leverage that to get more stages and more opportunities quicker. Ones is email signature. One of the best I think real estate entities we have as an expert or an influencer or a person who wants to become an expert or an influencer.
1 (10m 39s):
And most people don't use their email signature to tell people, here's what I've done or I'm doing. And so for example, I'll give you a, a real world example is whenever I did one of our blue talks on customer service at Harvard, I had that on my banner for a number of probably about a year and I had at least 10 bookings, paid speak engagements, paid thousands of dollars to do the talks where people actually had approached me and said, Hey, you know that talk you gave at Harvard that I saw on your email signature, can you deliver that talk at our office? Can you deliver that for our event or our corporate event or our office? And that all came from the fact that it was on my email signature. But I also look John and say, and how much credibility did I get from the people that couldn't hire me as a speaker but still clicked on it?
1 (11m 22s):
Maybe they're gonna reach out to us because they wanna speak on one of our stages or they want us to help them, but it's that credibility from it being on my signature signature. So I would say another way to leverage it is when you have an achievement, add it to your email signature. Just don't, you know, make your email signature so it's, you know, it's, it's a novel but add it to your email signature. Use it on your bio. You know when somebody's introducing you at an event to speak whenever they go and, and check out your short bio on Instagram or various social media places. Have it there. Make sure you do social media posts about the different achievements. Use it in pitches when you're wanting to get on a big name show or a podcast. If you've written for Forbes or entrepreneur or you've done a few TED Talks or what have you, that's going to put you ahead of the people that haven't done that.
1 (12m 5s):
And then another way you can leverage these things is to actually get celebrity endorsements so you can leverage your achievements to, I'm gonna say get on the radar of celebrities. And then of course getting those celebrity endorsements or photos with celebrities is gonna help you get more stages and more opportunities as well. So you know in about, I guess that was two or three minutes, that's just some of the ways that you can leverage some of these achievements that you may secure. Again, could be writing for a certain publication, could be being on a show or could be speaking on a certain stage. Those are some of the places you can put the achievements and also leverage them.
0 (12m 40s):

That's P D O P O L o.com. Let's face it, we all have a few bad business habits we can leave behind as we ring in the new year. And for me, one of those is not letting myself or my team get too comfortable because when you get too comfortable in business, new tech solutions and better systems can pass you by. That's why it's important to keep an open mind in your eyes and ears open for better ways of doing things. As an example, we can all continue to assume that scaling and training our teams on new software is going to be a tiny consuming and grueling process. Or we can leverage incredible all-in-one software solutions like HubSpot. The great thing about HubSpot is you can try before you buy.
0 (15m 43s):
That's right. No commitments, no hidden fees, not even a credit card is needed to sign up and you can say goodbye to grueling processes. HubSpot makes it easy for everyone to use so your team can spend more time on what matters most. Learn how HubSpot can help your business grow better in 2023 and get a special offer of 20% off on eligible plans at hubspot.com/EOF. Corey, a lot of people are saying that this space is saturated. I mean something that people have been saying every year for my 10 years in this business by the way. But give us your perspective. Is there enough room for more influencers in 20 22, 20 23 and beyond?
1 (16m 24s):
Influencers have never been more needed, but at the same time it has to be the right influencer for the right reason. So in other words, I believe there's more room than ever before for the right influencers doing the right things because there's also people that maybe aren't being very authentic. And so an example is, I did a talk a little bit ago about living an unfiltered life and I'll, I'll, I'll tell you what I did because I think it's, it kind of represents what I'm getting at here, how easy it is to live an a filtered life. And so when I say filtered life, I mean that person that when you go on a a social media ad and they have a picture of them in front of a house, a million dollar or 5 million house and they're saying, I'm gonna show you how to get this home.
1 (17m 9s):
What what you don't see is when they turn off the camera and the guy who actually owns the home comes outta the house and says, stop filming on my front lawn. You know, so we don't see that side of it. And so I consider that the filtered life when you're trying to represent something that you're not like, let me show you how to make seven figures even though the person hasn't made seven figures in their business. And so I think we've, we've never needed more authentic influencers never before. And so I did this talk, let's see, this one was, I, I never run up our blue talks but it is at Columbia University and I opened up the talk, I had bought a fx, a fake Rolex on the streets of New York the day before for $80. And I actually, so I have a Rolex and I looked at the two of them and they honestly looked identical.
1 (17m 49s):
So I was like, I gotta need to keep one away from the other cause I don't wanna smash the wrong one. But what I did was I had the fake Rolex on and I opened up my talk saying, you know what, I wanna separate myself from materialistic stuff and there's never a better place than on our blue talk stage. And so I took the watch off again, the fake Rolex and I took a hammer and I smashed it. And you heard a gasp in the audience cuz I described it as a Rolex that I had bought, I think I said for $10,000 used cuz I didn't wanna make it seem like it was a hundred thousand dollars Rolex or something. And then the gasp and everything. And then I revealed to them minutes, well probably seconds later, that this was an $80 Rolex that I bought on the street. And what I wanted to show them is that's how easy it is for somebody to make themselves appear like somebody they're not.
1 (18m 32s):
And so what I would say that John, is that we're seeing that so much inauthentic people that are trying to sell somebody sort of a bill of goods online. And that's why I think there's never been more of a need for the right experts and the right influencers. And the other thing I would say to that is there's never been more people coming to me asking, Hey, how do I land my TEDx talk? Or how do I get on a blue talk stage than ever before? Like it's, it's happening so crazy like it's happening almost daily. And so I also feel that more people than ever before want to actually break out and, and get their message to the world and start making an impact on the world and impacting lives in a positive way. So there's more people wanting to do it, which I also feel allows it to be more room for because of the fact that it's becoming such a common thing.
1 (19m 20s):
And at the same time, you know, it's then my job and, and our job to make sure that we're guiding these influencers in the right way so that they are doing it in an authentic way. So, you know, to come back to the question, yes there's, there's enough room and maybe there's never been more of a need, but I will say that I think we need more of the right influencers, the balance, the people that are maybe selling a bill of goods that really isn't the truth.
0 (19m 45s):
Transparency Fire Nation, you know, we've lived that for 10 years now with our income reports and everything else that we do. People want to go on the journey with you, you know, this fake until you make stuff. I mean that is so inauthentic. But when you're saying, Hey listen, I'm here right now and I'm trying to get to here and I want to help you on this journey, I want you to come along with me on this journey that's appealing to people, they resonate with that. Now public speaking is one of the top phobias, Corey, that humans have. What if we're not comfortable speaking on stages?
1 (20m 19s):
So I would say good and, and the reason I say that is because that's how I started. So I know it's possible to not be comfortable and build, even if you wanna call it a business, build a speaking business. I shared this John on an earlier episode about my standup story, so I won't go too far into it, but I'll just say the first time I ever got onto a stage was in a standup comedy club and I was tricked into performing standup and I ended up being the first person to go go up on stage. And I told two jokes to dead silence only to discover that the reason was is cuz the mic wasn't turned on. And, and then we turned the mic on. I never used to share this part of the story, but we turned the mic on and I told the jokes again and they still bombed.
1 (21m 1s):
So I've often said I'm probably one of the only comedians to bomb with the same material twice in 10 minutes. But having said that, that's, that's how I I I started, meaning I wasn't comfortable on a stage comedy stage, definitely not, but I wasn't comfortable speaking in front of people in the first place. And over time, and this is the part that, you know, it's a challenge for people because it's taken that first step, but over time you can learn the craft, I believe as well as anybody who's been comfortable speaking on a stage from day one. But I will say it's kind of important in a lot of ways, if you are that person that's, that's nervous or terrified, it's really important to work with the right person. It's important to get a good coach or a mentor or somebody who can help you do it in the right way.
1 (21m 43s):
Because as you alluded to, it is a big fear to people. So much so that, I remember Jerry Seinfeld and one of his comedy specials said the number one fear in the world above death to the average person is public speaking, which means that for the average person, if they were at a funeral, they'd rather be in the casket than doing the eulogy. And, and so you know, that that kind of just highlights how big of a fear this is. But I will say very possible to do and I'll, I'll give people two strategies for doing that. Well, I'll give a strategy and then I'll share something. But a strategy around how you can do this is think about ti a time. So in other words, if you're about to get on a stage, think about a time that you've impacted somebody's li life in a positive way and they shared the feedback.
1 (22m 29s):
So somebody said to you, this is how you changed my life or this is what you did for me. And think about that before you start speaking. So I do, by the way, John, I did that before we start this interview. I do that all the time now, is think about somebody's life I impacted because then I'll realize that what I'm about to do is about them and not about me. And that takes a lot of the focus off of me and the energy that I'm in at the time. And I'll give you an example. This literally happened just before, so I'm gonna read it to you really two second thing. But just came into me literally five minutes before this interview. This is the person, I won't say her name, but she said, hi Corey. Yes, this is the corrective video. And what she's referring to is we just put her blue talk video up just today or yesterday.
1 (23m 11s):
And she said, yes, this is the correct video and I really appreciate all that you and Shelly Shelly's my girlfriend have done to make this possible. Now I guess I can't hide anymore. And so that was what I read before I jumped on here today, John. And again, it's a reminder of what we're able to do for people. So then when I come on here, it's a reminder of why I wanna share this message is because it's about somebody else and not me. So it's about that lady and the fact that now she's saying I can't hide anymore. And by the way, it was her first time on stage. So if you're not comfortable speaking on stages, that's, I mean, so her, that was her first time in stage and that's why she's saying she can't hide anymore. But we've had 300 and some people just in two year, last two years on our stages and I would say at least 15 to 20% it was the first time they've ever delivered a talk in public in their life.

And I will say we've had zero people run off the stage and we've had, I don't we, I don't think we've ever had a person not finish their talk. And so it's good that you're not comfortable on stage because that means you're gonna be there with a good adrenaline, you're gonna be ready to deliver a powerful message, you're gonna be on your toes. But there's also a lot of ways to get you to feel comfortable to do it. And I also know I'm seeing it on a daily basis that it's very possible to start as uncomfortable and get so comfortable that you actually decide this is gonna be a part of your legacy
0 (24m 30s):
Fire Nation. Lots of value bombs there. And I really hope you realize that it's just a reality. If you wanna get your message out to the world, you just have to say, I have an obligation to do this. I'm going to do this because it's a passion of mine and I'm not letting anything get in my way. Now let's talk about speaking, writing and being a guest on interviews. Does that work for entrepreneurs or is it just beneficial to speakers and coaches?
1 (24m 55s):
I won't say it works more for entrepreneurs, but I think it's equally important and beneficial for both. So as an example, I know people that have never charged once for a talk ever and have leveraged those stages to build their business from scratch. We know people, for example, I'll do a Steve Jobs who I'm pretty sure helped Apple's market value by the talks that he delivered on stages over the years. But I'll give you an example, you know, even from my side of things is one time and one I'm gonna, I'd done it a couple times, but there was one time I launched a brand and pretty much the brand was built mostly from stages.
1 (25m 37s):
And this is the power of stages. So the brand was called Island Business News, it was a newspaper I had for about seven years, monthly publication similar to Success Magazine. And I remember doing, I was, I started this thing called the Island Business News bootcamps. And so we did our first one, and I don't know where it was maybe Infinite Wisdom, I'm not sure where this came to me, but I decide to ask the audience why or how many people here have heard of Island Business News. And so I was like, be before you came to the event, before you signed up, of course the events had the name there, but before that, how many people had heard of the brand And there was only like three or four hands, it was remove about 120 people. So then I kept doing these bootcamps over the course of about three years.
1 (26m 19s):
Now, the only two ways we marketed the business were these bootcamps and then also it was a publication. So it was sent around so people did see it of course if if showed up at their business or what have you. But I asked that same question in a room of similar size. It might have been maybe 150 or better, but I asked the room in a similar size about a year and a half later. And again, we hadn't done any advertising whatsoever, but I've been doing these bootcamps and speaking from the stage and about a hundred and, well, it was about 90% of the hands. So whatever that works out to like say 130 people hands went up that they heard of the publication before that event. So the only thing I was really doing is speaking from stages and within, it was, like I say, about a year and a half, two years, our brand in a room went from whatever it was, like 10% or something recognition to high nineties and all that was done simply by speaking from stages.
1 (27m 10s):
Another example of how entrepreneurs can leverage stages is, let's say you have a podcast, I've done this many times where I've actually said to people, Hey, I wanna do a contest and I'm actually literally speaking from the stage and I'll do a contest related to signing up, subscribing for our podcast and or something related to getting them to listen to the podcast in real time. And, and we'll see the show jump up the charts, you know, short term, but jump up the charts really quickly just from sharing that front of a room. And so what I would say is that's the power of one to many. And so if you're an entrepreneur, you have a cause or a message you want to get out there. I believe getting on a stage, there's nothing quite like it in terms of credibility and there's nothing quite like it in terms of reach.
1 (27m 54s):
So I would say yes, absolutely it's beneficial for entrepreneurs and there's many ways as an entrepreneur to leverage a stage to build brand awareness, to bring more people to your cause and and so on and so forth. And I would say, I'll add this in, we work with a lot of heart based and spiritual entrepreneurs and I'm gonna say the cool news is it even works for spiritual entrepreneurs, you know, so getting on stages, letting people know about their modality or letting people know about their business or how they work with and help people stages offer that opportunity. And of course that even works when it comes to summits, you know, if you're speaking on a summit, you know, and, and the other part of the question was writing, absolutely writing in much a similar way, whether it's working, writing for a book, you know, compilation book or your own book.
1 (28m 44s):
Of course you can literally go to podcasts and, and John, you know, you can give me your thoughts on this, but you go to go to a podcast or a podcast host and you've written the book on it and somebody else that pitches them has written the book on it, I would say nine times Outta 10, I'm gonna book the person that wrote the book on it. So writing it obviously is beneficial in that way. Being a guest on a show, you become the expert in that area. So I believe it's beneficial that way. So my answer in, in summary is absolutely it's beneficial to entrepreneurs and business owners just as much it is as it is to experts, speakers, coaches, and what have you. I'll
0 (29m 22s):
Confirm with that Fire Nation because it is so key as a podcast host to find the subject matter expert on that topic. And that is the key thing that we look for when we bring guests on our show. So Corey, you've dropped countless value bombs today. Let's talk about how Fire Nation can connect with you. What call to action do you have for our listeners today? And then we'll say goodbye.
1 (29m 44s):
Yeah, I'm happy to do that. As, as listeners can probably tell, I'm pretty passionate about our Blue Talk brand. I've, I've mentioned it a few times throughout and, and that's really because as I mentioned, we're seeing, we're approaching thousands, but we're seeing hundreds of people within our community grow and, and get achievements that they never thought possible. And so what we've been doing, just a short, super short story on Blue Talk is we've jokingly said Blue Talk is like, I'll call it the love child of TEDx and Chicken Soup for the Soul. And so basically we have people come on our stage that wanna speak about spirituality, people that wanna come and speak about business people that wanna come and share their life story. I'll, I'll kind of add into that.
1 (30m 25s):
Blue is B L U and it stands for Business Life Universe. And so what we've done is we've created this platform where we have people featured in co-author books, so anthology books, speaking on prestigious stages that are events like ucla. We just actually are adding Cambridge in the UK today. We're finalizing Stanford, we went to Harvard multiple times, Columbia. And so we're getting people on these really prestigious stages and at the same time we have a podcast of course and, and all those kind of things. But really John, what where I see the power of this is that the stuff it took me 15 years to achieve because the world's so different now. We're seeing our students and people in our blue tax community achieve that in weeks or months.
1 (31m 9s):
And so just a prime example, we have, we have a student come on, like I'm thinking of one person in particular and in two months she had spoken at our event at Harvard, she had shared the bill with Lisa Nichols, Les Brown, Kevin Harrington from Shark Tank. She was a co-author and a bestselling book with a celebrity and she also was featured on a, a top-rated podcast and so on and so forth. And I looked at that and said, I'm kind of jealous because it took me over 10 years to achieve even a fraction of that. And it was within like less than three months. And so what we're trying to do is we're trying to help people up level as experts go to the next level, get more credibility instantly, get more exposure, really quickly, get on our platforms cuz we're on Connect tv, Roku, apple, Amazon, all the places that you would expect and some you wouldn't.
1 (31m 57s):
And we're getting people on those platforms. And so that's what I'm passionate about, helping people up level like that. And so the call to action for me is I would love to offer a, a video training. So I, I've put together a video and I'd love to offer a video training to help people learn how to up level as an expert through stages, through books, through interviews. And of course I'll also real reveal how those same people can speak on our events at locations, like I said, like Columbia, Harvard, Cambridge, UCLA, and so on and so forth. Or co-author book with Joe Vitali from The Secret. That's our newest one we're working on. So what I would love for people to do, if that's cool, John, is to go to blutalks.com/fire and it's b l u without the E, so b l u.
1 (32m 46s):
So Blutalks with an s.com/fire. And there you can find the, the video that we put together for you and, and then I would just love to see you expand from there. And I would love to watch your rise continue
