3 Value Bombs
1) Be honest about what the book is and how you want it to be received. That involves being honest about the fact that your book isn’t for everyone. It allows you to define your audience and what you want them to gain from the book.
2) You can’t do the fun stuff in tech without data – and without good quality data. That really is the backbone of every strong company today.
3) It’s very different writing a book with a consistent narrative that flows between chapters, where each chapter builds upon the last.

Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: How to Write a Book While Working Full-Time
[1:28] – Lauren shares something that she believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- You should never ever give up or quit, no matter how hopeless things look. But there is value in knowing when you have to cut back or even drop out of something.
- The concept of quitting can be valuable; the most successful people know when to step back from something so that they can devote energy to something else
[3:48] – Time can be a struggle for humans. How did you find the time to write a book in 1 year while working full time?
- Writing a book while working full time takes a different kind of discipline; you have to give yourself extra hours to write the book.
- You have to be really consistent about setting aside time during each day to get a little bit done.
- Set soft goals. Draft one chapter per month and write the equivalent of 200 words per day.
- Setting aside one weekend day was really helpful because it didn’t feel like she was juggling her job with writing the book. You’ll be able to have that devoted brain space.
[7:39] – Writing the book changed both of Lauren’s desires: to write, as well as her writing style.
- Writing your first book, in many ways, will make you feel like you have never written a word in your life.
- It’s very different to write a book with a consistent narrative that flows between chapters, with each chapter building upon the last.
- Writing the book made her writing style more succinct and direct.
[10:03] – The easiest and the hardest aspects of writing a book.
- She published this book through the Pragmatic Programmers, which is a publisher that is devoted to a technical audience.
- It’s like math in the sense that once you know how to do the equations, you don’t even think about it.
- Data governance isn’t always the sexiest topic, and even practitioners don’t always want to do it because a lot of people think that it impedes their ability to innovate or to launch new models to production.
- Be honest about what the book is and how you want it to be received.

[16:46] – To those working full-time, is it realistic for them to write a book?
- The truth is that writing a book today takes two kinds of privilege. Time to be able to write for free, and a support system that can help you.
- Most people outside of a full-time role have caregiving duties either for parents or children. They have maybe volunteer commitments that they have to fulfill.
- At bare minimum you need a social network that can give you the time and space to write.
[19:17] – What Lauren wishes she knew about book writing prior to doing it
- It would have been great to know how fulfilling and worthwhile the process would feel once it was done.
[21:37] – That one thing Lauren wants her readers to remember after reading her book.
- AI is just data, and governing your data is going to give you a big advantage over your competitors.
