3 Value Bombs
1) If you want to build strong relationships with people, especially with higher profile people, you should not ask for a favor for at least a year; otherwise, they may view it as you just using them.
2) Optimize for interesting – that will help you keep moving.
3) Often many people are giving up too soon; be strategically patient, place your bet and be aware that the results may not come for a while; be willing to persevere while waiting.

Today’s Audio MASTERCLASS: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World with Dorie Clark
[1:13] – Dorie shares something that she believes about becoming successful that most people disagree with.
- She believes that sometimes it can hurt to ask. If you want to build strong relationships with people, especially with higher profile people, you should not ask for a favor for at least a year; otherwise, they may view it as you just using them.
[1:56] – What does “deciding what to be bad at” mean?
- Dorie concluded the problem was that people were afraid to decide what to be bad at.
- If you want to be great at something, you have to be bad at something else – and be willing to make that trade-off.
[3:21] – What does “strategic patience” mean, and why is it important?
- Strategic patience is a kind of muscular patience; you create a hypothesis, test it, and constantly re-evaluate it.
- Make peace with your patience.
- Often many people are giving up too soon, but if you are strategically patient, then you are placing your bet, and you are aware that the results may not come for a while. Be willing to persevere while waiting.
[6:20] – What is the importance of setting aside “20% of the time,” and how can you do it effectively in your business?
- It is not easy to get the 20% of the time.
- You have to fight for it
- 20% is enough time to nurture your next big offer or product.

[11:25] – Dorie talks about the concept of how to “optimize for interesting.”
- Most people put a lot of pressure on themselves, and it can be harmful in some ways.
- Optimize for interesting – that will help you keep moving.
[14:31] – How has writing the book The Long Game changed your view on what “failure” means?
- In the book, Dorie wrote five stretch goals for 2019, and 4 of those didn’t work out.
- One out of the five goals worked. It is a process that you need to go through, and you need to keep on persevering, and it is vital to talk about it.
- Failure is not a fixed state. There are so many ways to re-purpose learning as part of the endeavor, and then it might eventually succeed.
[16:46] – Dorie’s parting piece of guidance.
- She sees intelligent and talented individuals give up too soon, which often happens when you look around. Usually, the best takes a lot longer to achieve.
- The Long Game reverse engineered the process of getting through the dark times and deciding whether to pivot or keep going.
