How to feel accomplished at the end of every day
The word accomplished is oftentimes used as an adjective to describe someone who is highly skilled or successful.
A few years ago, as I was familiarizing myself with EOFire as a business and also learning new things about my own skills and strengths as I worked on different types of projects, I oftentimes ended my days feeling “Meh”.
I was SO excited to be on board with EOFire’s mission of Inspiring Millions; I was soaking up (and loving) the challenges and business lessons I was learning; and teaming up with my partner, John Lee Dumas, was proving to be a much smoother transition than I had anticipated.
How was it possible that I was ending my days feeling “Meh”?
Getting to the bottom of it
After a lot of reflection and asking myself some pretty tough questions, like:
- Did I make the right choice joining EOFire?
- Is Inspiring Millions what I’m meant to do?
- Am I ever going to learn enough to be able to actually make an impact?…
…I finally got to the bottom of it: I was ending my days feeling “Meh” because I didn’t have something visual or tangible to show myself that represented the work I had done, the time I had spent, or the frustrations I’d overcome throughout the day.
Even though I felt really busy, every once in a while I’d even end my days looking back and asking myself:
“Did I accomplish anything today?”
In addition to the tough questions I was asking myself about being a part of EOFire, actually wondering whether or not I was accomplishing anything pushed me over the edge.
You see, a big part of success for me is having a positive mindset, being motivated, and feeling accomplished, so I knew if I was ending my days feeling anything less, something had to change.
Thankfully, through my reflection, I quickly realized that I had 110% made the right choice by joining EOFire; I AM meant to help drive our mission of Inspiring Millions; and I’ve learned so much that I can share with others in order to make an impact.
When I got to the bottom of it, I realized I just needed to find a way to translate my work, my time spent, and my small wins throughout the day (visual or not) into success.
If I could do that, then I would be ending every day feeling accomplished.
Feeling accomplished at the end of every day
My immediate next thought was: “How on earth do I do this?”
Turns out, it’s much easier than it sounds.
Feeling accomplished at the end of every day is within reach if you follow these 3 steps.
How to feel accomplished in 3 Steps
1. Plan ahead for productivity
Clearly define what it is you’re going to work on before your day starts, and be sure it’s a task or project that is meaningful to you and your business.
We do this by winning tomorrow today.
Every night before you end your workday, write down the ONE goal you want to accomplish the next day that’s meaningful to you and your business.
Knowing exactly what you’ll work on the minute you sit down at your desk will prevent any wasted time being spent on wondering “what now?”
Diving straight into working on your ONE goal will ensure your day starts out productive.
2. Know what your next most important step is for discipline
Once you know what your ONE goal for the day is, start mapping out the steps required to achieve your goal.
You may not know what every step is going to look like or require until you get to it, which is why it’s important to NOT get caught up by the things you don’t know. Instead, focus on what you do know: your next most important step.
If you continue to work on your next most important step, the step that follows will reveal itself, and being disciplined enough to continue your journey step by step without making excuses will ensure you achieve your goal for the day.
3. Time block for focus
You have your ONE goal and you know what your next most important step is. Only thing left to do is FOCUS: Follow One Course Until Success.
By setting time blocks for each step you need to take in order to achieve your goal, you’ll help fend off distractions and start to snowball your momentum.
Let’s say your ONE goal is to complete and schedule your next blog post. If you’re starting at square one, your next most important step is to come up with the topic or focus for your post.
Give yourself five minutes to brainstorm the topic or focus for your post, and before you dive in start your timer. When five minutes is up, look at what you’ve written down, and then write out your next most important step.
Set a time limit, press start on your timer, and repeat.
Feeling accomplished at the end of every day is within reach.
If you’re not currently ending every day feeling accomplished, then it’s time to find a way to translate your work, your time spent, and your small wins throughout the day (visual or not) into success.
The quickest way to do so is to start practicing productivity, discipline and focus as outlined above so that you have at the very least ONE goal you’ve achieved at the end of every day that you can celebrate.
