Do The Work: Top 5 Struggles that hold entrepreneurs back
True or false:
When we’re struggling with how to do something (or why something isn’t working), we turn to resources, guides, or our community for support and feedback.
True.
Okay, how about this one…
True or false:
When we turn to resources, guides, or our community for support and feedback, we take the feedback we’ve received and then put a plan in place so we can take action.
…only you can answer this one.
But let’s be real: if you’re not answering that second statement with “true”, then flat out: you’ve gotta just DO THE WORK.
Resources, guides & community support
Resources, guides and community support are all incredible things. In fact, I don’t think we’d be able to make it without them.
In order to learn and grow, we need to have access to resources and guides that can help us: whether that be via the web or through hiring a mentor or coach, without the help of those who have been there before, we’re going to have a really difficult time knowing what path to follow.
Community support is also integral: surrounding yourself with like-minded people is what will help keep you going when you don’t feel like you can keep on going, not to mention the priceless feedback you can get through being an active member of a community.
However, there comes a time on your journey when it’s time to tip the scale.
In the beginning, we’re all going to be spending a lot of time consuming resources, guides and investing time in our communities (both giving and receiving support). In fact, we’re going to be spending much more time consuming than we will actually creating.
But what happens once you’ve been given all the resources, guides and support to help you take that first step?
The scale needs to tip, because there is not one resource, guide or community out there who can do the work that YOU have to do in order to figure out if what you want to do is going to work.
Once that scale starts to tip, that doesn’t mean that you won’t still be investing time in consuming and learning, however, you have to start moving towards actually creating in order to move forward.
Remember, the #3 thing that holds people back when they’re just getting started out on their entrepreneurial journey: doing the work.
Do the work
Let’s check out a few examples of situations where you might be letting “just doing the work” hold you back.
1. Finding your perfect customer
You want to find your perfect customer, but you haven’t yet.
There are endless resources on how to go about defining your perfect customer (or avatar) and then going out and finding them, so why haven’t you found them yet?
Here are a couple of actions you can take right now in order to get one step closer to finding your perfect customer:
– Join an online community in your industry and listen to the pain points and recurring themes that are coming up in that online community.
Does your experience or your business idea relate to any of the pain points or recurring themes you’re hearing about? If so, then start having conversations with those people who are voicing those pain points to see if they might be your perfect customer.
If not, join a different online community.
– Define who you think your perfect customer is.
If you can’t find them in an online community, then imagine (and define on paper) what your perfect customer might be like. What are their pain points based on the information and value you’re looking to provide through your business idea?
Remember: Do the work.
2. Launching your website
You want to launch your website, but you haven’t done it yet.
I’m willing to bet that you’re letting perfectionism hold you back to a certain extent here – am I right? It’s not that you haven’t been working hard to get your website up and running, but for any number of reasons you haven’t hit publish yet.
This is important to understand: Your website will evolve over time, and it’s never going to be perfect, so accept that, and move forward.
Here’s what the EntrepreneurOnFire website looked like back in Sept 2012:
Quite a bit different than what it looks like today:
The progression of our site has been happening continuously over two and half years.
Here are a couple of actions you can take today in order to get your website launched:
– Choose a theme already and push publish!
You can change your theme any time you want, and I promise you it won’t be the end of the world if your website isn’t 110% complete when you launch it.
Here’s a quick look at the Top 5 things every website needs. If you have these things (or even 2 or 3 of these things), then you should be launching your website today.
– Identify the #1 thing that’s holding you back from launching, and outsource that 1 thing to someone else.
If that’s design, then go on Fiverr and hire someone to create whatever you’re looking for. If it’s coding, then go on oDesk and hire someone on a project-basis to help you complete whatever code you need.
I don’t know what else it could be that’s holding you back besides perfectionism, so that should cover it :)
3. Building an email list
You want to start building your email list, but you’ve put up an opt in up on your site and nothing is happening.
First of all, building an email list takes time.
Second, here’s a post with 7 Ways you can start building your email list today.
If building an email list is something you’re struggling with, and you’ve done all 7 of the things I mention in the post linked above and your email list STILL isn’t growing, then I’ll personally get on Skype with you to talk about why it’s not working. (This is code for: there’s no way your email list isn’t growing if you’re doing the things I talk about in that post).
4. Growing your audience
Ahhhh, the ever-so-popular topic of growing your audience.
EVERYONE wants to know how to do it, yet so many people aren’t doing it.
My theory: it’s because they aren’t doing the work.
Here is a post I wrote on the Top ways to grow your audience. Everything I promised above applies here, too. If you follow each of the steps I’ve laid out in this post and your audience still isn’t growing, then let’s chat.
5. Monetizing
You want to start monetizing, but you’re not yet. Welcome to the life of an entrepreneur!
Monetizing definitely takes time, and continuing to focus on that one product, service or community that you’re going to knock it out of the park with is NOT going to help you start monetizing.
Start small.
Publish an eBook, and actually market it.
Offer up some one-on-one coaching sessions, and actually tell people you’re doing it.
Become an affiliate for some products and services you know your audience wants and needs.
Keep your focus on serving your audience, and they WILL come to you with that big product, service, or community idea. But it’s not going to happen right away.
Start small.
Your next step
Resources, guides and community support are all incredible things. We have to start out as consumers so we can learn what steps we have to take in order to make something happen.
But the time will come when the scale has to tip. You need to transition from being a consumer, to becoming a creator. This is an important transition because it is the ONLY way you will start to move forward in creating and growing your business. It’s time to just do the work.
